The Trachelospermum jasminoides, commonly known as Star Jasmine or Chinese Star Jasmine, is a hugely popular and versatile evergreen climber that is a staple in Australian gardens. It is prized for its lush, glossy, dark-green foliage that looks fantastic all year round. The real star of the show, however, is its spectacular display of pure-white, star-shaped flowers that appear in abundance, especially in summer, releasing an intense, sweet perfume that can fill a whole garden.

Caring for Your Star Jasmine

  • Growing Conditions: This tough plant is very adaptable. It performs well in full sun, which encourages more flowers, but it’s also a great option for shadier spots. It thrives in well-draining soil and is highly tolerant of heat and dry conditions once established. In colder areas, its foliage can take on an attractive bronze-red tint during winter.
  • Watering: Water regularly while the plant is young to help it establish a strong root system. Once settled, it’s remarkably drought-tolerant, but it will appreciate deep watering during extended dry periods.
  • Feeding: To encourage vigorous growth and a good show of flowers, feed it with a slow-release, general-purpose fertiliser in spring and again in late summer.
  • Pruning: Pruning is mainly required to keep it tidy and to control its spread. Prune it after its main flowering period to shape it and encourage bushier growth.

Usage in the Garden

The Star Jasmine is incredibly versatile. It is most famously used as a beautiful, fragrant climber for covering trellises, fences, pergolas, and arbours. It can also be used as a dense, rambling groundcover to suppress weeds on embankments. Due to its dense foliage and tolerance for light shade, it’s also a great plant for use in large pots and planter boxes on balconies and patios.
