Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Moonshine’ is a highly desirable cultivar of the Snake Plant (Mother-in-Law’s Tongue), celebrated for its unique and subtle colouration. It forms a compact, upright clump of thick, stiff, sword-shaped leaves that are significantly broader than the typical Sansevieria. The foliage has a remarkable, soft, silvery-green hue, often described as luminous or metallic, especially under bright light, giving it the ‘Moonshine’ moniker. When the plant is mature, subtle dark green banding may appear, but the overall effect remains a beautiful, pale, monochromatic green. Like all Sansevierias, it is incredibly robust, highly drought-tolerant, and excellent for air purification indoors.
Care Tips
-
Light: Tolerates low light, but the best silvery colour is maintained in bright, indirect light. In very low light, the leaves may become a darker green. Avoid direct, harsh sun which can burn the pale leaves.
-
Watering: Water sparingly. This succulent is highly prone to rot if overwatered. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. When in doubt, always wait a few extra days to water.
-
Soil: Requires a fast-draining potting mix, such as a specialist succulent or cactus blend, to ensure quick drainage and aeration.
-
Fertilising: Minimal feeding is required. Apply a half-strength, balanced liquid fertiliser only once or twice during the spring and summer growing season.
-
Maintenance: It is a very low-maintenance plant that rarely needs pruning. New pups (offsets) will emerge around the base, which can be separated to propagate new plants.
