Ophiopogon nigrescens, widely known as Black Mondo Grass, is an exceptionally unique and highly sought-after evergreen perennial, prized for its dramatic, near-black foliage that adds striking contrast and texture to any garden. Native to Japan, this distinctive plant forms dense, clumping mounds of slender, strap-like leaves that are initially deep purple-green but quickly mature to an intense, lustrous black, especially when grown in sufficient light. It typically reaches a height and spread of 15-25 cm (6-10 inches). In summer, it produces delicate spikes of small, bell-shaped, pinkish-white flowers that are followed by shiny, dark purple to black berries, providing additional visual interest.

While it can tolerate some sun, particularly in cooler climates, its deepest black colouration is achieved in partial to full shade here in New South Wales. It thrives in consistently moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil, though it is quite adaptable once established. Black Mondo Grass is an outstanding choice for creating bold contrasts in mixed borders, as an eye-catching groundcover beneath lighter-leaved plants, along pathways, in rock gardens, or as a sophisticated accent in containers. It is remarkably low-maintenance, generally deer resistant, and free from significant pest or disease issues, making it a reliable and enduring addition to both contemporary and traditional garden designs.
