The Phalaenopsis, commonly known as the Moth Orchid, is arguably the most popular and easiest-to-grow orchid for the home environment. It is celebrated for its stunning, long-lasting blooms that appear on tall, arching spikes. The flowers are typically large, flat, and resemble the wings of a moth, hence the common name. They come in an incredible range of colours, including classic white, pink, purple, yellow, and patterned varieties. The plant forms a rosette of thick, glossy, paddle-shaped, dark-green leaves, and is a fantastic way to add elegance and enduring colour to any room.
Caring for Your Moth Orchid
- Growing Conditions: The Phalaenopsis thrives indoors in a warm position with bright, indirect light. An east or shaded north-facing window is usually perfect. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight, which will quickly burn the leaves. It prefers typical room temperatures and hates cold draughts.
- Potting Mix: These are epiphytes, meaning they naturally grow on trees, so they do not grow in regular soil. They must be planted in a coarse, open mix, usually consisting of bark chips or sphagnum moss, which allows for excellent air circulation around the roots.
- Watering: This is the trickiest part! Water when the roots inside the pot look silvery-white. If the roots are bright green, they have enough water. Water thoroughly, allowing all the excess water to drain out, and never let the plant sit in a saucer of water. Also, avoid getting water into the “crown” (the central growing point) of the plant, as this can cause rot.
- Feeding: Feed with a liquid orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer), diluted to half-strength.
Usage in the Home
Moth Orchids are perfect feature plants for adding sophistication to a living room, dining table, or office. Because their flowers last for months, they provide exceptional value. They look stunning grouped together or as a single specimen in a clear pot, which allows you to monitor the health of the roots.
