Usage: Kikuyu is a popular choice for home lawns, especially in regions with hot, dry summers. Its rapid growth makes it ideal for high-traffic areas, as it can quickly recover from wear and tear. It’s also commonly used on sloped areas for erosion control due to its strong root system.
Care Tips:
- Mowing: Kikuyu requires frequent mowing during its active growing season (summer) to keep it from becoming too spongy and to maintain a neat appearance. Aim for a mowing height of 25-50mm (1-2 inches).
- Watering: While drought-tolerant, Kikuyu benefits from deep, infrequent watering during dry periods to maintain its colour and health. Water deeply once a week rather than a light sprinkle daily.
- Fertilising: Apply a balanced lawn fertiliser in spring and again in late summer to support its vigorous growth. Look for a fertiliser with a high nitrogen content.
- Weed Control: Due to its dense growth, Kikuyu naturally outcompetes many weeds. However, broadleaf weeds can be controlled with selective herbicides. Be sure to use products that are safe for Kikuyu grass.
- Thatch Management: Over time, Kikuyu can develop a thick layer of thatch. Det hatching or aeration every 1-2 years can improve water and nutrient penetration and is best done in late spring or early summer.
- Pest and Disease: While generally robust, Kikuyu can be susceptible to some fungal diseases like dollar spot and pests like armyworms. Regular monitoring and proper care can help prevent most issues.
