The ‘Golden Halo’ Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Golden Halo’) is a unique and highly ornamental conifer. While the species itself is a broad, spreading ground cover, this cultivar is often grafted onto a single, straight trunk to create a “standard” or “lollipop” form. This gives it a graceful, weeping head of dense, fine foliage that cascades downwards. The real showstopper is its intense, year-round golden-yellow colour, which provides a brilliant contrast against a green backdrop.
General Care & Usage Tips
- Position: For the best golden colour, plant in a full sun position. It can tolerate a bit of part shade, but the foliage will appear more lime-green. It’s also tolerant of wind and coastal conditions, making it a great choice for seaside gardens.
- Soil: It’s not fussy about soil type, as long as it’s well-draining. It will thrive in a wide range of soils, including clay, loam, and sandy soils.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during hot, dry periods and while the plant is establishing. Once it’s settled in, it’s quite drought-tolerant.
- Fertiliser: A slow-release general-purpose fertiliser applied in spring will help with vigorous growth.
- Pruning: To maintain the “lollipop” shape, give the head a light trim in spring to encourage dense foliage. You should also regularly remove any unwanted upward-growing shoots from the trunk (suckers) to maintain the standard form.
- Usage: The ‘Golden Halo’ standard is an excellent choice for a formal or classic garden design. It looks particularly effective when planted in a row to line a path or driveway, or as a pair to frame an entrance. It’s also an exceptional feature plant in a large pot on a patio, balcony, or deck.
