‘Young Lycidas’ is a stunning English rose bred by David Austin, known for its dramatic colour and powerful fragrance. The large, deeply cupped blooms are a rich blend of deep magenta, cerise pink, and purple, which mellows to a purplish-mauve as the flower ages. The blooms are held on slightly arching stems, giving them a graceful, nodding appearance. Its fragrance is one of its most celebrated features, a powerful blend of classic Old Rose with notes of tea and cedar. The plant has an upright, slightly arching growth habit with good disease resistance and excellent repeat flowering.

Usage This rose is perfect for adding a touch of drama and a powerful scent to a garden. Its beautiful nodding blooms are perfect for planting in a mixed perennial border where they can gracefully spill over the edges. Its strong perfume makes it an excellent choice for a garden bed near a path or seating area, so you can fully appreciate its delightful aroma. The blooms are also fantastic for cutting and bringing indoors for a vase, where their unique colour and fragrance will truly stand out.

Care Tips

  • Sunlight: Plant in a spot that receives full sun (at least six hours per day) for the best flowering performance and to maintain its vibrant colour. The deeper tones are often more pronounced in cooler weather.
  • Soil: Prefers rich, fertile, and well-drained soil. Amend the soil with plenty of organic matter, like compost or well-rotted manure, before planting.
  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during the dry summer months. It’s best to water the soil at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry, which helps to prevent fungal diseases.
  • Fertilising: Feed regularly throughout the growing season (spring to autumn) with a fertiliser formulated for roses. A slow-release granular fertiliser in early spring and regular liquid feeds will encourage a strong, continuous bloom.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the bush and remove any dead or weak stems. You can also ‘deadhead’ spent flowers during the season to promote repeat blooming.
  • Pests & Diseases: While it is generally a healthy rose, it’s still a good idea to monitor for common rose pests and diseases. Good air circulation is a key preventative measure.
  • Tolerances: It performs well in hot Australian conditions but will benefit from some protection from the fiercest afternoon sun.
