The Dendrobium kingianum, commonly known as the King Orchid or Pink Rock Orchid, is one of Australia’s most popular and easiest-to-grow native orchids. This charming plant forms tight clumps of hard, cane-like stems called pseudobulbs, which store water and nutrients. In late winter or early spring, it produces spectacular spikes of highly fragrant, star-shaped flowers that range in colour from deep magenta-pink to pure white, often with a darker throat. Its toughness and beautiful scent make it a fantastic choice for both novice and experienced growers.
Caring for Your King Orchid
- Growing Conditions: The King Orchid is very hardy. It thrives in a bright position that receives morning sun or dappled light—it can handle a fair bit of sun, but protect it from harsh afternoon summer sun, especially in hot climates. Excellent air movement is essential to prevent fungal issues.
- Potting/Mounting: It is an epiphyte, so it should not be planted in soil. Use a coarse, orchid-specific potting mix (bark chips and gravel) or mount it onto a rock, bark, or wood.
- Watering: Water regularly during the warmer growing season (spring and summer), allowing the potting mix to drain completely. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and winter to encourage flowering—a distinct dry rest is key to getting those spectacular blooms.
- Feeding: Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser during the growing season only.
Usage in the Garden
This versatile orchid is perfect for growing in pots on a patio, balcony, or under a veranda where you can enjoy its sweet perfume. It also looks sensational when mounted onto a piece of old wood or a rock, mimicking its natural habitat in the wild. Its hardiness makes it a great, low-maintenance choice for adding a native touch to the garden.
