Westringia fruticosa ‘Low Horizon’ is a fantastic Australian native shrub bred for its extremely low, dense, and spreading growth habit. It forms a neat, weed-suppressing ground cover with fine, grey-green foliage that gives a soft texture to the garden. Small, delicate white flowers appear throughout the year, peaking in spring and summer. This cultivar is exceptionally tough, tolerating heat, drought, moderate frost, and coastal conditions, making it an excellent choice for a low hedge, path edging, or mass planting where a low profile is desired.
Care Tips:
- Position: Best in full sun to partial shade. The foliage colour and density are best when it receives plenty of sunlight.
- Soil: Highly tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils, but must be well-drained. It is naturally tolerant of coastal salt spray.
- Watering: Very drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly when young. Requires minimal supplementary watering in most Australian climates.
- Pruning: Low-maintenance, requiring only a light trim after flowering (or a hard prune every few years) to maintain a super-neat, dense shape and prevent it from becoming woody.
- Fertilising: Does not require heavy feeding. Use a slow-release native plant fertiliser in spring if desired, but be careful not to over-fertilise.
