Westringia fruticosa ‘Bulli Coastal Creeper’ is a very hardy Australian native shrub selected for its dense, flat, and spreading growth habit. It forms an excellent, weed-suppressing ground cover with fine, dark green foliage and produces small, scattered white flowers throughout the year. As the name suggests, this cultivar is exceptionally tough and well-suited to exposed and harsh conditions, including coastal salt spray, wind, and periods of drought once established. It’s a superb choice for large areas, banks, or trailing over retaining walls.
Care Tips:
- Position: Performs best in a position with full sun, though it will tolerate light shade. Full sun encourages the densest growth.
- Soil: Highly versatile and adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soil types, including sandy or poorer soils.
- Watering: Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and water-wise. Water regularly during its first year to ensure a good root system develops.
- Pruning: Requires very little pruning due to its naturally low, prostrate habit. A light trim once a year will maintain a very neat appearance and encourage density.
- Fertilising: Does not require heavy feeding. Use a slow-release native plant fertiliser in early spring, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Usage: Perfect for coastal gardens, erosion control on banks, and mass planting as a low, robust ground cover.
