Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Zenzi’ is a highly desirable dwarf cultivar of the popular ZZ Plant (Zanzibar Gem). Unlike the typical ZZ Plant, ‘Zenzi’ is significantly more compact, rarely exceeding 50 cm in height, and has a much denser, tighter growth habit. Its thick, dark green leaflets have a slightly curled or rolled appearance, giving the plant a unique, almost succulent-like texture. This cultivar is extremely slow-growing and maintains its neat, upright, clump-forming shape, making it perfect for small desks, shelves, or as part of a miniature indoor garden display. Like all Zamioculcas, it is incredibly hardy, drought-tolerant, and thrives on neglect.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Tolerates a wide range of conditions, from low light to bright, indirect light. Protection from direct, harsh sun is essential to prevent leaf burn.
-
Watering: Water sparingly. This is a highly drought-tolerant plant that stores water in its thick, underground rhizomes. Allow the soil to dry out completely before giving it a thorough soak. Overwatering is the biggest risk and leads to rhizome rot.
-
Soil: Use a very well-draining soil mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to ensure quick drainage and prevent water retention.
-
Fertilising: Minimal feeding is necessary. Apply a half-strength, balanced liquid fertiliser only once or twice during the warmer spring and summer growing season.
-
Maintenance: It is a very low-maintenance plant. Only wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and keep them glossy.
-
Toxicity: Note that all parts of the ZZ Plant are poisonous if ingested, so ensure it is placed well out of reach of pets and children.
