Davallia fejeensis, commonly known as the Hare’s Foot Fern or Rabbit’s Foot Fern, is a unique and decorative epiphyte (a plant that grows on other trees) native to Fiji. It is instantly recognisable and highly prized for its fuzzy, thick, creeping rhizomes that grow on the surface of the soil and cascade over the edge of the pot. These rhizomes are covered in soft, silver-brown hair, strongly resembling the foot of a rabbit or hare, hence the common name. The fern produces finely divided, lacy, triangular, bright green fronds that create a soft, airy texture. It is an excellent non-toxic choice for hanging baskets or tall planters, where its rhizomes can be displayed prominently.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers medium to bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light but will grow more slowly. Avoid direct sunlight, which will scorch the fronds.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the top surface to just dry out between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter.

  • Rhizome Care: The fuzzy rhizomes store water, which is why the fern is quite drought-tolerant. When watering, ensure the rhizomes themselves receive moisture, but avoid keeping them perpetually wet, as this can cause rot.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity to prevent the frond tips from turning brown and crispy. Misting, using a pebble tray, or placing it in a humid location like a bathroom is beneficial.

  • Soil: Use a very loose, well-draining, and airy potting mix, such as a mix formulated for orchids or aroids that includes orchid bark and perlite.

  • Fertilising: Feed lightly once a month during the active growth period (spring and summer) with a diluted liquid fertiliser.
