Buxus Faulkner is widely considered one of the best varieties of Japanese Box for Australian conditions. It is distinguished from the standard Buxus microphylla by its slightly larger, rounder leaves and its deeper, more lustrous green colour. This variety is exceptionally hardy and maintains its vibrant green foliage even during the colder months, whereas other Box varieties may bronze off in the winter frost.
Naturally growing into a compact, rounded shrub of approximately 1 metre in height and width, it is the quintessential choice for formal gardening. Its tight branching structure makes it an ideal candidate for topiary balls, cones, and low to medium formal hedges. It is slow to moderate in growth, which means once it is pruned into a shape, it holds that form for a significant period.
Care Tips
-
Position: Highly versatile, thriving in full sun through to heavy shade. In hotter Australian climates, it performs exceptionally well with some afternoon shade to protect the lushness of the leaves.
-
Climate: Extremely hardy and frost-tolerant. It handles the varied conditions of Southern and Coastal Australia with ease.
-
Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is adaptable to most soil types but will struggle in waterlogged or extremely dry, sandy sites.
-
Watering: Requires regular watering while becoming established. Once mature, it has moderate water needs but appreciates a deep soak during dry summer spells to maintain its glossy appearance.
-
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer. This ensures the plant has the nutrients required to produce fresh, green flushes of growth.
-
Pruning: Can be pruned at almost any time of year, though late spring is ideal to tidy up after the main growth flush. Use sharp shears to ensure clean cuts, which prevents the leaf edges from browning.
-
Pests: Monitor for Box Blight or Scale. Ensuring good airflow around the plants and avoiding overhead watering can help prevent fungal issues.
