Aechmea (pronounced eek-me-uh) is one of the most widely grown bromeliad genera in Australia, cherished for its hardy nature and architectural form. Most species are epiphytic, meaning in their native South American habitats, they grow on trees or rocks rather than in soil. They are characterized by a rosette of tough, strap-like leaves that form a central “cup” or “tank” designed to catch and store rainwater.

The foliage is often highly ornamental, featuring silver banding, deep burgundy tones, or sharp spines along the margins. The flowering display is nothing short of magnificent; a sturdy stalk emerges from the centre, topped with vibrant bracts in shades of pink, red, or orange, which protect smaller flowers that are often blue or yellow. These colourful bracts can remain attractive for several months. While the individual plant dies after its once-in-a-lifetime flowering event, it reliably produces “pups” (offsets) around the base to continue the colony.

Care Tips

  • Position: Thrives in bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Most Aechmeas, like the popular Aechmea fasciata, will scorch in the direct, harsh Australian afternoon sun but need good light to maintain their leaf variegation.

  • Climate: Best suited to subtropical and warm temperate regions. They love humidity and are generally frost-tender. In cooler climates like Melbourne or Hobart, they should be kept indoors or in a heated glasshouse during winter.

  • Soil: Requires an extremely free-draining medium. Use a specific bromeliad or orchid mix containing bark and perlite. If planting in the ground, ensure they are in a raised rockery or sandy soil where water cannot pool around the base.

  • Watering: The most important rule is to keep the central “urn” about half-full of fresh water. Flush the tank every few weeks to prevent stagnation and mosquito breeding. The potting mix should be kept lightly moist but allowed to dry out between waterings.

  • Fertilising: They are not heavy feeders. Use a half-strength liquid fertiliser applied to the foliage and the tank once a month during spring and summer. Avoid dropping slow-release pellets directly into the cup.

  • Pruning: Only necessary to remove the spent flower spike once it turns brown. Cut it as deep into the rosette as possible without damaging the central tank.

  • Maintenance: To propagate, wait until the “pups” at the base are about one-third the size of the mother plant before carefully detaching them with a sharp knife.

Landscape Use Aechmeas are quintessential feature plants for tropical and modern gardens. They look spectacular when mass-planted as a groundcover under the filtered light of large trees like the Sphaeropteris cooperi. They are the ultimate “low-maintenance” container plant; a single Aechmea in a medium-sized Stump pot creates a sophisticated statement for an entryway or patio. In a Divider Trough, they provide a repeat-patterned, architectural border that stays evergreen and lush.
