Abutilon x hybridum is a stunning and fast-growing evergreen shrub, well-loved for its prolific and colourful display. Commonly known as Flowering Maple or Chinese Lantern due to its maple-like leaves and beautiful, bell-shaped flowers that hang gracefully from its branches. These flowers come in a huge range of colours, from vibrant reds, oranges and yellows to soft pinks and whites, and can appear throughout the year, especially in milder climates.
Caring for Your Abutilon
- Growing Conditions: Abutilons do their best in a spot that gets full sun to part shade. In hot Aussie summers, they appreciate some afternoon shade to prevent their foliage from wilting. They prefer a fertile, well-draining soil and can be susceptible to root rot if left in waterlogged conditions. They’re also happy in a pot or container, which makes them perfect for patios and balconies.
- Watering: While they are fairly drought-tolerant once established, they prefer consistently moist soil. Water them regularly, especially during dry periods, and apply a good layer of mulch to help retain moisture.
- Feeding: These plants are hungry! Give them a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring and autumn to keep them healthy and promote a good show of flowers.
- Pruning: To keep your Abutilon from getting leggy and to encourage a bushy, compact shape, it’s best to prune it hard in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. A light tip-prune throughout the year will also help to maintain its shape and encourage more blooms.
Usage in the Garden
The Abutilon is incredibly versatile. Its upright, open habit makes it a great choice for adding a tropical or cottage feel to garden beds. It can be used as a striking specimen plant, a backdrop in a mixed border, or even trained into a standard (a small tree shape). Due to its hardiness and long flowering period, it’s also a cracking option for pots and hanging baskets where its lantern-like flowers can really shine.
