Acmena smithii Minor is a compact version of the traditional Lilly Pilly, specifically selected for its smaller foliage and denser growth habit. It is an evergreen workhorse in Australian landscaping, beloved for its versatility and resilience. The leaves are tight and fine-textured, creating a solid wall of greenery when pruned. While the mature foliage is a rich dark green, new flushes of growth emerge in warm shades of bronze and copper, providing seasonal interest.

In late spring and summer, it produces small, creamy-white flowers followed by edible, fleshy white or pale pink berries that attract native birds. One of the most significant benefits of this cultivar is its excellent resistance to Psyllids (the pests that cause leaf curling and pimples in other Lilly Pillies), which keeps the canopy looking smooth and healthy. It typically grows to about 3 metres if left unpruned but is most commonly maintained as a tight hedge between 1 and 2 metres.

Care Tips

  • Position: Best in full sun to part shade. More sun will result in a denser habit and more vibrant colour on the new growth.

  • Climate: Highly adaptable to most Australian regions. It is frost-hardy once established and handles the salt air of coastal gardens very well.

  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. However, it is very tough and will grow in a wide variety of soil types, including heavier clays.

  • Watering: Requires regular watering while becoming established. Once mature, it is quite drought-tolerant, though it appreciates a deep soak during hot, dry Australian summers to maintain its lush appearance.

  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser or a native-specific feed in spring. An extra application in autumn can help support growth through the milder months.

  • Pruning: This is a premier hedging plant because it responds so well to pruning. It can be clipped into very sharp, formal shapes or maintained as a soft, informal screen.

  • Maintenance: Mulching around the base is recommended to keep the root system cool and retain moisture.
