Agapanthus orientalis, often referred to as the Lily of the Nile, is a staple of Australian gardening due to its near-indestructible nature and reliable summer display. This evergreen variety forms dense mounds of fleshy, dark green foliage that remains attractive year-round. In late spring and throughout summer, it produces spectacular floral displays where dozens of small, trumpet-shaped blue flowers form a large, rounded head (umbel) atop a thick stalks that can reach up to 1 metre in height.

This plant is highly valued for its ability to thrive in neglected areas and its resistance to most pests and diseases. It is an excellent soil stabiliser for embankments and is frequently used to define driveways or garden borders. While it is a vigorous grower that spreads via thick rhizomes, it provides a lush, cooling aesthetic during the height of the Australian heat. The flowers are also excellent for cutting and bringing indoors for floral arrangements.

Care Tips

  • Position: Performs best in full sun but is remarkably adaptable to part shade. While it will grow in shaded areas, flower production will be significantly reduced.

  • Climate: Extremely hardy across most of Australia. It is drought-tolerant, heat-hardy, and can withstand moderate frosts. It is also an ideal choice for coastal gardens as it handles salt-laden winds with ease.

  • Soil: Thrives in almost any soil type, from heavy clay to sandy loams. For best results, ensure the soil is well-drained, though it is more tolerant of “wet feet” than many other perennials.

  • Watering: Requires regular watering while establishing. Once mature, it is very drought-hardy, but a deep soak during a dry summer will result in more prolific flowering and greener leaves.

  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to boost the summer flower show.

  • Pruning: Very low maintenance. Remove the spent flower stalks at the base once blooming has finished to keep the plant looking tidy and to prevent self-seeding in sensitive environmental areas.

  • Maintenance: Every few years, clumps can become overcrowded. You can lift and divide the rhizomes in autumn or winter to rejuvenate the plant and create new specimens for elsewhere in the garden.
