The Aglaonema species, widely known as the Chinese Lucky Plant or Chinese Evergreen, is a revered indoor plant, particularly in Asian cultures where it is believed to bring good fortune, wealth, and prosperity. This tropical perennial forms a handsome, bushy clump of large, upright leaves. While traditionally admired for its deep green and silver-patterned foliage, modern varieties offer an incredible spectrum of colours, including bright pinks, reds, and creamy-yellows, making them highly decorative. As a houseplant, the Aglaonema is prized for its extreme durability and tolerance for lower light conditions, making it one of the easiest and most reliable plants for adding long-lasting colour and life to indoor spaces.
Care Tips for Aglaonema (Chinese Lucky Plant)
-
Light: Prefers medium to low, indirect light. The more vibrant, colourful cultivars need brighter light to maintain their intense colouration. Avoid direct sun, which can easily scorch the leaves.
-
Watering: Allow the top 5–7 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. It likes consistent moisture but is prone to root rot if left sitting in saturated soil. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
-
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity. The plant will look its best in higher humidity, though it tolerates typical household air well. Misting occasionally is beneficial.
-
Temperature: Thrives in warm, stable indoor temperatures (ideally 18°C–25°C). Ensure it is protected from cold draughts, which can cause leaf yellowing and damage.
-
Fertilising: Feed monthly during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser.
-
Maintenance: Wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to remove dust and maintain their sheen. Remove any yellowing lower leaves at the base.
