Ajuga reptans, commonly known as Bugleweed or Carpet Bugle, is a hardy perennial that excels at creating a dense, weed-suppressing mat in the garden. While it belongs to the mint family, it is far more manageable and is prized for its attractive foliage and charming floral display. The leaves are typically a dark, lustrous green, but many popular cultivars in Australia offer foliage in shades of deep burgundy, bronze, or even variegated cream and pink.

During the warmer months, the plant sends up numerous erect spikes, roughly 10 to 15 centimetres tall, covered in small, tubular flowers. These blooms are a magnet for bees and other beneficial garden insects. Because it spreads via runners (stolons), it is an excellent choice for filling in gaps between pavers, covering embankments, or acting as a living mulch under larger shrubs and trees. It provides a lush, cooling effect in the landscape and is particularly useful for adding colour to those difficult, shadier spots in the garden.

Care Tips

  • Position: Prefers part shade to full shade. While it can tolerate some morning sun, the intense Australian afternoon sun can scorch the leaves, especially in drier inland regions.

  • Climate: Very hardy and adaptable to most Australian climates. It is frost-tolerant and performs well in both cool temperate and subtropical areas, provided it has adequate moisture.

  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It can tolerate heavier clay soils better than many other groundcovers, as long as the area isn’t permanently waterlogged.

  • Watering: Requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist. It does not have high drought tolerance and will wilt if the soil dries out completely during a heatwave.

  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage a lush carpet of growth and a prolific flowering season.

  • Pruning: Very low maintenance. You can remove the spent flower spikes after blooming to keep the plant looking tidy. If it begins to spread beyond its intended boundary, simply pull up the runners at the edges.

  • Maintenance: Ensure good air circulation to prevent “crown rot,” which can occasionally occur in extremely humid conditions or if the mulch is piled too high against the centre of the plant.
