Alcantarea extensia is a true giant of the bromeliad world, prized for its architectural grandeur and tropical presence. Native to the rocky cliffs of Brazil, it has become a favourite in Australian landscape design for its ability to create an instant focal point. The plant forms a massive, urn-shaped rosette of wide, strap-like leaves. Unlike some other Alcantarea species that have silver or purple tones, Extensia is known for its lush, vibrant green foliage that remains attractive year-round.
Care Tips
-
Position: Thrives in full sun to part shade. In the harshest parts of Australia, some light afternoon shade will help prevent the foliage from bleaching, though it is remarkably sun-tolerant once acclimated.
-
Climate: Best suited to warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions. It is relatively hardy but should be protected from heavy frost, which can damage the large leaves.
-
Soil: Requires excellent drainage. While it can grow in the ground in sandy or rocky soils, it is often happiest in a free-draining orchid-style mix or a high-quality potting soil amended with pine bark.
-
Watering: Keep the central “tank” or “well” filled with clean water. Flush the water out periodically to prevent stagnation. The soil should be kept moist but never waterlogged.
-
Fertilising: Use a controlled-release fertiliser low in nitrogen, or apply a very diluted liquid seaweed extract directly into the central tank during the warmer growing months.
-
Pruning: Very low maintenance. Only remove the lower leaves as they naturally age and turn brown to keep the plant looking tidy.
-
Maintenance: Because the central tank holds water, ensure the plant is stable. The weight of the water and the large foliage can make the plant top-heavy.
