Silver Plum is one of the most highly sought-after Alcantarea cultivars in Australia due to its extraordinary colour contrast. The top of each leaf has a shimmering, dusty silver-green patina, while the undersides are a rich, dark burgundy-plum. This bicolour effect makes the plant a visual masterpiece, especially when the wind catches the leaves or when it is planted in an elevated position where the dark undersides are visible.
This is a large-scale, structural plant that can grow to approximately 1.5 metres wide and high. It forms a massive, water-holding rosette that adds a sophisticated, tropical “resort” feel to any landscape. Like its relatives, it eventually produces a monumental flower spike that can reach over 2 metres tall, bearing small fragrant flowers. It is incredibly tough and is often chosen for its ability to handle full Australian sun while maintaining its intense plum and silver hues.
Care Tips
-
Position: Best grown in full sun to part shade. Full sun exposure is recommended to maintain the deepest plum colour on the leaf undersides and the metallic sheen on top.
-
Climate: Prefers warm temperate, subtropical, or tropical climates. While it is quite hardy, it should be protected from heavy frosts which can damage the large, fleshy foliage.
-
Soil: Requires excellent drainage. It is best suited to a coarse, free-draining mix such as an orchid or bromeliad bark-based potting medium.
-
Watering: Keep the central “tank” of the plant filled with water. It is a good idea to flush this out with fresh water every few weeks. The soil around the base should be kept slightly moist but never soggy.
-
Fertilising: Use a controlled-release fertiliser low in nitrogen or a very diluted liquid seaweed fertiliser applied to the soil or tank during the warmer months.
-
Pruning: Very low maintenance. Only the oldest, lower leaves need to be removed as they eventually brown off to keep the rosette looking pristine.
-
Maintenance: This is a heavy plant, especially when the central reservoir is full of water. Ensure it is placed in a sturdy, stable location.
