Araucaria heterophylla, famously known as the Norfolk Island Pine, is a majestic evergreen conifer native only to Norfolk Island, yet it has become a defining feature of the Australian coastline. It is renowned for its strikingly formal, symmetrical growth habit, with distinct horizontal tiers of branches that form a perfect triangular silhouette. In its natural coastal habitat, it can reach heights of over 30 to 50 metres, though it stays much smaller when grown in a container.

Despite its common name, it is not a true pine. Its foliage consists of soft, bright green needles on young trees, which become darker and more incurved as the tree matures. It is incredibly tough and has evolved to withstand the harshest salt-laden winds, which is why it is the primary choice for beachside promenades and coastal parks across Australia. It is also widely used globally as a “living Christmas tree” because of its tiered structure and ability to thrive indoors as a juvenile.

Care Tips

  • Position: Outdoors, it requires full sun. As an indoor plant, it needs very bright, indirect light; otherwise, it will become “leggy” and lose its lower branches.

  • Climate: Prefers coastal, Subtropical, and Warm Temperate climates. It is sensitive to heavy frost when young but is remarkably resilient to heat and salt spray once established.

  • Soil: Needs well-drained soil. It is quite adaptable to different soil types, including sandy coastal soils, provided there is no stagnant water around the roots.

  • Watering: Once established in the ground, it is quite drought-tolerant. For potted specimens, water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Do not allow it to sit in a saucer of water, as this can lead to root rot.

  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Indoor plants benefit from a weak liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season.

  • Pruning: Generally requires no pruning. In fact, cutting the central leader (the top) will permanently ruin its iconic symmetrical shape. Only remove lower branches if they become brown or for clearance.

  • Growth Rate: It is a relatively slow-growing tree, particularly in its early years or when its roots are restricted in a pot.
