Asplenium antiquum is a beautiful, compact, and popular species of fern, often simply called Bird’s Nest Fern, similar to the Asplenium nidus but typically maintaining a slightly tighter, more vase-like, and more upright form. It is native to eastern Asia and is typically found growing as an epiphyte (a plant that grows on another tree, not as a parasite) in tropical forests. It features wide, undivided, wavy-edged fronds that are a bright, apple-green colour and have a glossy surface. The fronds unfurl from a fuzzy, central “nest,” which is where the plant gets its common name. This fern is highly valued as an indoor plant due to its dramatic, architectural shape, ease of care, and ability to thrive in shaded, humid environments. Importantly, it is generally considered non-toxic to pets.

Care Tips for Asplenium Antiquum

  • Light: Prefers medium to low, indirect light. It needs light but must be protected from direct sunlight, which will quickly scorch and yellow the fronds. An east-facing or shaded south-facing window is ideal.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to just begin to dry out before watering again.

  • Crucial Watering Tip: Always water around the edges of the pot. Avoid pouring water directly into the central “nest” (the growing point), as water accumulating there can lead to rot and kill the plant.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity to prevent the frond tips and edges from turning brown and crispy. Grouping it with other plants, placing it near a humidifier, or using a pebble tray is highly beneficial.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix that mimics its natural environment, such as an orchid mix or a mix with added coir and perlite.

  • Fertilising: Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks during the spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser.

  • Maintenance: Dust the glossy fronds occasionally with a damp cloth. Never apply leaf shine products to the fronds, as this can damage the surface.
