Asplenium nidus ‘Crispy Wave’ is a popular and architectural cultivar of the Bird’s Nest Fern, prized for its distinctive foliage texture. Unlike the smoother fronds of the standard Bird’s Nest Fern, ‘Crispy Wave’ produces short, bright apple-green fronds that are intensely stiff, thick, and heavily pleated or wavy along the edges. These fronds grow upright in a tight, symmetrical, vase-like rosette, giving the plant a unique, contemporary, and highly decorative look. This fern is non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for pet owners, and it thrives in the warm, stable conditions found in homes and offices.
Care Tips for Asplenium nidus ‘Crispy Wave’
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, but is highly tolerant of medium to low light. Avoid all direct sunlight, which will scorch its stiff, delicate fronds. An east-facing window or a bright room set back from the window is ideal.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Allow the top centimetre of the soil to just begin to dry out before watering again.
-
Crucial Watering Tip: Always water around the edges of the pot. Avoid pouring water directly into the central “nest” or crown, as water accumulating there can easily cause the growing point to rot.
-
Humidity: This plant loves high humidity. Low humidity is the primary cause of crispy, brown edges and tips. To increase humidity, mist frequently, place it on a pebble tray, or use a room humidifier.
-
Soil: Use a very well-draining, airy potting mix, such as an orchid or aroid mix, as they are naturally epiphytes.
-
Fertilising: Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks during the spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser.
-
Maintenance: Dust can settle in the deep pleats; use a soft, damp brush or cloth to clean the fronds gently. Avoid touching the new, young fronds emerging from the centre, as they are very fragile.
