Bidens ferulifolia, also known as Apache Beggarticks or Fern-Leaved Beggarticks, is a fast-growing, evergreen perennial often grown as an annual in cooler climates. It features delicate, fern-like foliage and an abundance of small, bright golden-yellow daisy flowers that bloom profusely from spring through to autumn. Its low-growing, mounding habit makes it perfect for filling in garden beds, using as a groundcover, or as a vibrant ‘spiller’ in hanging baskets and containers. This plant is a fantastic choice for attracting bees and butterflies to the garden.
Care Tips:
- Position: Prefers a spot in full sun. It can tolerate some part shade, but flowering will be reduced.
- Soil: Plant in well-drained soil. It is adaptable and can handle a variety of soil types, but dislikes wet, heavy soil.
- Watering: Drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly, especially in hot weather, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Pruning: Bidens is generally low-maintenance and self-cleaning, so deadheading isn’t necessary. If the plant becomes leggy or untidy, you can give it a light trim to encourage a bushier shape and more flowers.
- Fertilising: For best results, fertilise monthly with a general-purpose liquid fertiliser, especially for plants in containers, which lose nutrients more quickly.
