Calathea zebrina, commonly known as the Zebra Plant, is a classic and highly dramatic tropical perennial. It is named for its distinctive foliage: large, oval, velvety leaves that feature dark green, feather-like stripes radiating outwards from the midrib against a lighter green background. The undersides of the leaves are often a rich, solid burgundy or purple, adding an extra layer of colour and contrast. Like all Calatheas, it exhibits nyctinasty, folding its leaves upward at night. This plant forms a dense, upright clump and is an excellent choice for adding a touch of bold, architectural pattern and tropical luxury to any indoor space with stable, warm conditions.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers medium to bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight will scorch the leaves and cause the colours to fade. It tolerates lower light, but the growth will slow, and the stripes may become less defined.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water when the top couple of centimetres of soil feel dry. It is sensitive to tap water chemicals, which can cause brown tips. Using filtered, distilled, or rainwater is recommended.
-
Humidity: Requires high humidity. Low humidity will quickly lead to crispy brown edges. Place it in a naturally humid location, group it with other plants, or use a humidifier to keep the air moist.
-
Temperature: Thrives in warm, stable temperatures (ideally 18°C–28°C). Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix that retains moisture, such as a mix incorporating perlite, orchid bark, and coir.
