Ceropegia woodii, commonly known as Chain of Hearts, Rosary Vine, or Sweetheart Vine, is a beautiful and popular trailing succulent. Its long, slender vines are adorned with delicate, heart-shaped leaves that can be a deep green or a variegated mix of green, white, and pink. It has a fast-growing, cascading habit, making it an ideal choice for hanging baskets or high shelves where its beautiful foliage can be admired.

Care Tips:

  • Light: This plant loves bright, indirect light. It can handle a little direct morning sun, but too much harsh, direct sun can scorch the leaves and cause them to lose their colour. If the stems are very long and the leaves are far apart, it’s a sign it needs more light.
  • Watering: Like most succulents, it’s susceptible to root rot from overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially in winter when the plant goes into a dormant state. A good way to check is to feel the leaves; if they are firm, it doesn’t need water. If they feel a little soft or shrivelled, it’s time for a drink.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix, such as a succulent or cactus mix, to prevent waterlogging.
  • Pruning: You can prune the vines to control the length and encourage a fuller, bushier plant.
  • Propagation: Chain of Hearts is very easy to propagate from stem cuttings. You can either place a cutting with a few nodes into water until roots form, or lay the stem directly on top of the soil. Some plants also produce small, bead-like tubers along the stem, which can be planted directly in soil to start a new plant.
