The Clivia miniata ‘Belgium Hybrid’ is a standout perennial celebrated for its dramatic foliage and spectacular flowers. It forms a dense clump of broad, glossy, dark green, strappy leaves that provide year-round texture. In late winter to early spring, it sends up thick flower stalks topped with large, spherical clusters of vibrant, usually deep orange-red, trumpet-shaped flowers. This hybrid is prized for its strong colours and robust growth. It is a fantastic plant for adding colour and structure to shady spots in the garden or for growing in pots.
Care Tips:
- Position: Thrives in a sheltered position with deep shade to dappled light. Direct sunlight will scorch the leaves. They are perfect for planting under trees or on the south side of a house.
- Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. If grown in a pot, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix.
- Watering: Water well during the spring and summer growing season, allowing the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and winter to encourage flowering (a dry rest period is essential).
- Fertilising: Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring, and supplement with a liquid fertiliser during the main growing season.
- Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks by cutting them off near the base. They dislike being repotted frequently and flower best when slightly pot-bound.
