Cordyline australis ‘Red Sensation’ is a tough and showy perennial known for its strong, architectural form. It features long, sword-like leaves in a rich, dark burgundy-red that hold their colour year-round. Over time, it develops a thick, woody trunk, eventually growing into a palm-like tree, but it is often used as a bold feature plant in garden beds, borders, and large containers. It offers excellent vertical interest and is incredibly hardy, tolerating a range of conditions.
Care Tips:
- Position: Thrives in a sunny to partly shaded position. The best leaf colour is achieved in full sun.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but is quite adaptable. It can tolerate coastal conditions and periods of dry weather once established.
- Watering: Water regularly when young. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, but deep watering during extended dry periods will keep it looking its best.
- Pruning: Low-maintenance. Remove dead or damaged lower leaves by cutting them off close to the stem to keep the trunk tidy.
- Frost: It can tolerate light frosts, but severe frost may damage the foliage, especially when the plant is young. Plant in a sheltered spot if heavy frosts are common in your area.
- Usage: Fantastic for tropical, coastal, or contemporary garden designs. It also makes a great container plant.
