Leighton Green is a popular variety of the Leyland Cypress, widely regarded as one of the most reliable hedging plants for large Australian properties. It is prized for its exceptionally fast growth rate and its ability to form a solid, impenetrable wall of foliage. The tree features flat, fan-like sprays of deep green leaves that stay lush and vibrant throughout the seasons.
If left unmanaged, this conifer can reach heights of over 10 to 15 metres, making it an excellent choice for large-scale windbreaks or sound barriers. However, it is highly responsive to pruning and can be maintained as a formal hedge as low as 3 to 4 metres. Its dense habit provides excellent privacy and creates a stately, structured look in the landscape.
Care Tips
-
Position: Thrives in a position with full sun. It needs plenty of light to maintain its dense foliage from the base to the top of the tree.
-
Climate: Extremely hardy and adaptable. It is frost-tolerant and handles the coastal winds and varied temperatures of many Australian regions with ease.
-
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including sandy loams and heavier clays, provided they do not remain waterlogged.
-
Watering: Requires regular watering while establishing. Once the root system is mature, it is quite drought-tolerant, though it will grow faster with consistent moisture during dry periods.
-
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support its vigorous growth.
-
Pruning: Essential for maintaining a hedge. Prune the sides and top at least once or twice a year to keep the growth tight and prevent the plant from becoming too large for its space.
-
Spacing: For a dense hedge, plants should typically be spaced 1 to 1.5 metres apart, depending on how quickly you want the screen to close.
