Ficus benghalensis ‘Audrey’, often known as the Audrey Banyan Fig, is a stylish and architectural houseplant quickly gaining popularity in Australia. It offers a similar dramatic, upright, tree-like form to the Fiddle Leaf Fig but is generally considered easier to care for. It features large, slightly velvety, deep green oval leaves with distinctive pale green or creamy-white veins. When mature, the tree can develop aerial roots, though this is less common indoors. The ‘Audrey’ cultivar is a fantastic feature plant that brings a sophisticated, lush tropical feel to any bright room.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It needs plenty of light to thrive. Place it near a sunny window (east or west-facing are great), but protect it from the harsh, direct midday or afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
-
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 5-7 cm of soil feels dry. Allow excess water to drain completely and never let the plant sit in water, as this will cause root rot. It is susceptible to leaf drop if over- or under-watered, so find a consistent schedule.
-
Humidity: While generally less fussy than other Ficus types, it appreciates high humidity. Mist the leaves occasionally or use a humidifier, especially during dry periods.
-
Temperature: Thrives in warm, consistent indoor temperatures (ideally 18°C–25°C). Keep it away from cold draughts or heaters.
-
Pruning: Prune the tips in spring to encourage branching and a bushier, denser shape. Wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to keep them glossy and dust-free.
-
Toxicity: Like all Ficus, the sap is mildly toxic and can irritate skin or eyes, and is harmful if ingested by pets or children.
