Juglans nigra, or the Black Walnut, is a large deciduous tree native to North America but grown in cooler parts of Australia for its high-quality timber and unique nuts. It is a slow-growing but eventually massive tree, reaching heights of 20 to 30 metres with a broad, spreading canopy. It is easily identified by its deeply furrowed, dark grey-black bark and large, compound leaves that turn a striking yellow in autumn before dropping.

The nuts are encased in a thick, green, aromatic husk that does not split open even when ripe. Inside is a very hard, thick, black shell that is notoriously difficult to crack. However, the effort is rewarded with a kernel that has a much stronger, more robust, and earthy flavour than the common English Walnut (Juglans regia). The wood is also one of the most prized timbers in the world for fine furniture and cabinetry due to its durability and rich, dark grain.

Care Tips

  • Position: Requires full sun and plenty of space to accommodate its large mature size.

  • Climate: Best suited to Cool Temperate climates. It requires a significant period of winter chill and a long, warm growing season to ripen the nuts properly.

  • Soil: Needs deep, fertile, and well-drained alluvial soil. It has a deep taproot and does not tolerate shallow or compacted soils.

  • Watering: Requires regular and deep watering during its first few years of establishment. Once mature, it is moderately drought-tolerant but produces better nut crops with consistent moisture.

  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser or a thick layer of well-rotted compost around the drip line in early spring.

  • Pruning: Generally requires minimal pruning other than removing lower branches to create clearance or taking out dead wood. This should be done in late autumn or early winter to prevent “bleeding” of sap.

  • Harvest: Nuts typically fall to the ground in autumn. The green husks should be removed immediately (wear gloves, as they stain skin and clothing permanently) and the nuts allowed to dry in a cool, airy place for several weeks before cracking.
