Juniperus conferta, known as the Shore Juniper, is a prostrate shrub native to the coastal sand dunes of Japan. It is highly valued in Australia for its incredible hardiness and ability to form a dense, weed-suppressing mat of foliage. It rarely grows taller than 30cm but can spread up to 2 metres wide, with long, trailing branches that hug the ground. The foliage consists of soft, pointed needles that are a cool emerald to blue-green, often developing a silvery cast.

As its name suggests, it is one of the most salt-tolerant plants available, making it a go-to choice for beachfront properties where salt spray and sandy soils would kill more delicate species. Beyond the coast, it is a versatile performer used to spill over retaining walls, cover large embankments, or provide a low-maintenance underplanting for larger shrubs and trees.

Care Tips

  • Position: Thrives in full sun. It requires high light levels to maintain its dense habit; plants grown in too much shade will become sparse and lose their vibrant colour.

  • Climate: Extremely versatile across Australia. It is highly heat-tolerant, drought-tolerant, and frost-hardy, making it suitable for both coastal and inland conditions.

  • Soil: Requires excellent drainage. It performs exceptionally well in sandy or rocky soils. It will struggle in heavy clay or waterlogged areas, so ensure the site is free-draining.

  • Watering: Low water requirements once established. During the first summer, water regularly to help the root system take hold. Once mature, it can survive long periods of dry weather.

  • Fertilising: Requires very little feeding. A light application of a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early spring is sufficient to encourage fresh growth.

  • Pruning: Generally requires very little maintenance. You can trim the edges if it begins to spread beyond its designated space. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as it may not re-sprout.

  • Mulching: While it eventually forms its own living mulch, an initial layer of gravel or organic mulch will help suppress weeds while the plant is young.
