Characteristics of a Lanceolate-Leaved Sweet Orange:

  • Foliage: The key feature is the glossy, dark green leaves that are longer and narrower than those of many common oranges (which tend to have more ovate leaves). This can give the tree a denser, more attractive ornamental appearance.

  • Fruit: Produces medium to large, round fruit with a bright orange rind. If it is a Navel-type, it will be seedless or nearly seedless. The pulp is a classic sweet orange colour, highly juicy, and very sweet with a good balance of flavour.

  • Ripening: Varieties associated with this feature, such as ‘Lane Late’, are typically late-season fruit, maturing in late winter and often hanging on the tree with good quality until spring or early summer.

  • Tree Habit: The tree usually forms a medium-sized, compact, spherical-shaped evergreen with a high-yielding capacity.

Care Tips

  • Position: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for the sweetest, best-coloured fruit. Shelter from strong winds is beneficial.

  • Climate: Best suited to Warm Temperate and Subtropical climates. Most sweet oranges are reasonably cold-tolerant but need protection from heavy frost when young.

  • Soil: Plant in deep, fertile, and very well-drained soil. Drainage is critical; ensure no waterlogging.

  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the growing season and when the fruit is swelling. Consistent moisture improves fruit quality and juice content.

  • Fertilising: Citrus are heavy feeders. Apply a high-quality citrus fertiliser (high in nitrogen) three to four times a year: in early spring, mid-summer, and early autumn.

  • Pruning: Prune lightly after the fruit harvest to shape the tree, thin the canopy, and remove dead wood. Remove any suckers growing below the graft union immediately.
