A Citrus Splitzer is a cleverly designed plant where two compatible citrus varieties (a Lemon, such as Eureka, and a Lime, such as Tahitian) are grafted onto a single, hardy rootstock. This allows gardeners with limited space, like those with small courtyards or balconies, to grow two commonly used fruits from one compact tree. The tree is evergreen, provides attractive, glossy foliage, and produces fragrant white blossoms, leading to a year-round supply of both fresh lemons and limes.

Care Tips (Essential for Grafted Plants):

  • Position: Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily) to ensure heavy flowering and optimal fruit development for both the Lemon and Lime varieties.

  • The Graft Point: Do not bury the graft unions (the visible joints where the Lemon and Lime branches join the rootstock) when planting; they must always remain above the soil line.

  • Rootstock Suckers: It is critical to remove any shoots (suckers) that emerge from the trunk below the two graft unions. These are from the rootstock and will grow vigorously, starving the productive Lemon and Lime varieties if not removed quickly and cleanly.

  • Watering: Citrus plants are thirsty. Water deeply and regularly, especially during the spring bloom and summer fruiting stages. Do not let the potting mix or soil completely dry out. Mulch well, keeping the mulch away from the trunk.

  • Soil & Feeding: Citrus are heavy feeders. Use a slow-release fertiliser specifically designed for citrus in early spring, mid-summer, and early autumn. Ensure the soil is well-drained.

  • Pruning & Balance: The Lemon variety is usually the more vigorous grower and can easily dominate the Lime side, shading it out. To maintain a healthy, balanced tree, prune the Lemon side back more heavily than the Lime side to ensure both sides receive equal sunlight and space.

  • Usage: Perfect for planting directly in the garden or growing in a large pot (at least 50L) on a sunny patio or balcony.
