The “Life on the Rock” featuring a Schefflera (Umbrella Tree) is a distinctive and highly durable interior feature. This arrangement is created by training a small Schefflera plant’s roots to anchor and spread across the surface of a porous, moisture-wicking rock, such as lava rock or ceramic. The rock sits in a shallow water tray. The Schefflera, being a tough and adaptable plant, thrives in this environment, absorbing water and nutrients as they wick up through the rock’s structure. It mimics a rare, naturally occurring environment and is exceptionally low-maintenance, requiring only that the water reservoir be kept full. The Schefflera’s glossy, palmate leaves contrast beautifully with the texture of the rock, creating a peaceful, miniature landscape.
Care Tips:
-
Position: Place in a location with bright, indirect light. The Schefflera is tolerant of lower light but will grow more healthily and look its best with good light. Avoid direct, harsh afternoon sun.
-
Watering: This is the easiest part. Simply keep the base tray or dish filled with water. The rock will continuously draw water up to the roots. Never let the tray dry out completely.
-
Maintenance: Occasionally mist the foliage to keep the leaves glossy and prevent dust buildup. Remove any damaged or yellowing leaves.
-
Feeding: Fertilise sparingly. Add a small amount of highly diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to the water reservoir once a month during the spring and summer growing season.
-
Growth: The Schefflera can be lightly pruned to maintain its compact, bonsai-like shape, cutting just above a leaf node.
