Ligularia dentata ‘Reniformis’, universally nicknamed the Tractor Seat Plant, is an exceptionally striking herbaceous perennial grown primarily for its foliage. It is defined by its enormous, thick, leathery, kidney-shaped leaves (reniformis means kidney-shaped) that can reach up to 45 centimetres wide. The foliage is a deep, glossy green and is held horizontally on strong stems, creating a bold, structural, and tropical effect in the garden. In summer, the plant produces tall flower spikes topped with bright orange-yellow, daisy-like flowers, but it is the dramatic foliage that commands attention year-round. It is a fantastic choice for damp, shady areas of the garden or for large feature pots.

Position: Requires a position in partial to deep shade. Direct, hot afternoon sun will cause the leaves to wilt and scorch. It prefers a sheltered spot.

Soil: Needs rich, fertile soil that retains moisture. This plant is very moisture-loving and struggles in dry conditions. Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting.

Watering: Must be kept reliably moist, especially during hot weather. It is not drought-tolerant. If the plant wilts dramatically during the day, it is a clear sign it needs water immediately, though it may recover overnight.

Climate: Best suited to Cool to Temperate climates. It handles humidity but dislikes extreme heat and dry air.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with an organic, slow-release fertiliser or top-dress with compost and well-rotted manure to support its large leaf growth.

Maintenance: The leaves are a favourite snack of slugs and snails, so protection may be required. Remove spent flower stalks after the blooms fade. The plant can be divided in early spring if the clump becomes too large.
