Rosa ‘Margaret Merril’ is a celebrated Floribunda rose, introduced in 1978, which has achieved international recognition for its exceptional qualities, earning the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. It produces medium-sized, semi-double to double flowers that have a lovely, classic Hybrid Tea form when young, opening to a beautiful, soft, pearly-white or ivory colour often kissed with a delicate pink blush, especially on the petal edges. The plant is admired for its profuse and continuous flowering habit, with clusters of blooms appearing throughout the season. Its greatest attribute is its intense, unforgettable fragrance—a powerful blend of rose, citrus, and spice—making it one of the most highly scented white roses available. It grows as a medium-sized, upright shrub with good disease resistance.
Care Tips
-
Position: Requires a position in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun daily) for the best flower production and fragrance intensity.
-
Climate: Well-suited to Cool to Warm Temperate climates and is generally reliable and hardy.
-
Soil: Plant in rich, deep, fertile, well-drained soil. Amend the soil with plenty of organic matter before planting.
-
Watering: Water deeply and regularly, particularly during the hot, dry summer months and when the plant is actively blooming. Ensure water reaches the roots and avoid wetting the foliage.
-
Fertilising: Feed regularly throughout the growing season (spring to late summer) with a quality rose fertiliser to support its continuous flowering habit.
-
Pruning: Prune in winter (dormant season) to remove old, weak, and damaged wood, and to maintain a tidy, open framework. Deadhead spent flower clusters during the season to encourage rapid re-blooming.
-
Maintenance: While having decent disease resistance, monitoring for common rose diseases (like black spot) during humid weather and treating proactively is recommended.
