The ‘Navelina Dwarf’ is a popular and reliable early-season Navel Orange cultivar grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock. This keeps the tree at a manageable height of 1.5 to 2.5 metres, making it an ideal choice for growing in large containers on patios or for smaller backyard spaces. The tree is evergreen, ornamental, and relatively compact.
‘Navelina’ is highly valued for being one of the earliest Navel oranges to ripen, often ready for harvest in late autumn or early winter, well before the main Navel varieties. The fruit is medium-sized, round to slightly oval, and is virtually seedless. It possesses the classic Navel orange characteristics: thick, bright orange rind that is easy to peel, and sweet, juicy, aromatic flesh with low acidity, making it perfect for fresh eating and children’s lunchboxes. Its early ripening time makes it a sought-after variety for those who want fresh citrus as the weather cools.
Care Tips
-
Position: Requires a position in full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for the sweetest fruit and best production. Shelter from strong winds.
-
Climate: Best suited to Warm Temperate and Subtropical climates. It has good cold tolerance but protect young plants from heavy frost.
-
Soil: Plant in deep, fertile, and very well-drained soil. For container growing, use a high-quality, specialised citrus mix.
-
Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially when the fruit is setting and swelling in the warmer months. Consistent moisture is vital for juicy fruit.
-
Fertilising: Citrus are heavy feeders. Apply a high-quality citrus fertiliser (high in nitrogen) three to four times a year: in early spring, mid-summer, and early autumn. Potted dwarf trees need more attention to feeding due to the restricted soil volume.
-
Pruning: Prune lightly after the main harvest to maintain its compact shape, thin out congested branches, and remove any suckers growing below the graft.
-
Harvest: Fruit ripens early, from late autumn to early winter. Pick when the skin is fully orange.
