The Neem Tree is a highly versatile and resilient tree native to the Indian subcontinent but well-established in the warmer parts of Australia. It is a member of the mahogany family and is prized for its ability to provide deep, cool shade in hot climates. The tree features long, pinnate leaves with serrated edges that remain a lush green throughout the year.
Neem is most famous for its chemical compound, azadirachtin, which is found in its seeds, leaves, and bark. This compound is a powerful natural insecticide and fungicide, making the tree a “living pharmacy” for organic gardeners. In spring, it produces clusters of small, fragrant white flowers followed by olive-like fruits. While it can grow into a large tree reaching 15 to 20 metres in height, it is often pruned to keep it manageable in suburban settings.
Care Tips
-
Position: Requires a position in full sun. It is a light-demanding tree that needs plenty of space to develop its broad, spreading canopy.
-
Climate: Ideally suited to Tropical and Subtropical Australia. It is highly heat-tolerant but very sensitive to frost; young trees can be killed by temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius.
-
Soil: Exceptionally adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including poor, stony, or sandy soils. However, it must have good drainage as it will not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
-
Watering: Very drought-tolerant once established. It develops a deep taproot that allows it to access moisture deep in the soil. Water regularly while the tree is young to help it get a strong start.
-
Fertilising: Requires very little fertiliser. A light application of a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring can encourage faster growth in its early years.
-
Pruning: Responds well to pruning. You can prune it to maintain a desired height or to encourage a bushier habit. Pruning is best done in the warmer months when the tree is actively growing.
-
Maintenance: Being a natural pest repellent, it is rarely bothered by insects. In fact, many gardeners use a tea made from its leaves as a natural spray for other plants in the garden.
