Neomarica northiana, commonly known as Walking Iris or Apostle Plant, is a captivating evergreen perennial well-suited for shaded to partly shaded gardens. It forms elegant clumps of glossy, sword-shaped green leaves, providing lush tropical foliage year-round.
Its unique flowers, resembling orchids, emerge on flattened stems, displaying white outer petals with intricate yellow and brown bases, and recurved blue-purple inner petals. While individual blooms last only a day, they appear sequentially throughout warmer months. A fascinating characteristic is its “walking” habit: after flowering, new plant lets form at the tips of arching flower stalks, eventually bending to the ground and rooting, allowing the plant to naturally spread across the garden.
Neomarica northiana thrives in moist, well-drained soil and tolerates moderate watering once established. It’s an excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, containers, or shaded areas, adding an exotic touch with minimal fuss.
