The Pilea peperomioides, commonly known as the Chinese Money Plant or Pancake Plant, is a hugely popular and stylish houseplant, celebrated for its unique, architectural look. It features slender, upright stems topped with distinctive, round, fleshy leaves that look just like large coins or pancakes. It has a modern, minimalist aesthetic and grows in a beautiful, clumping habit, often producing little offsets or “pups” from its base, which can be easily shared with friends.
Caring for Your Chinese Money Plant
- Growing Conditions: This plant thrives indoors in a spot with bright, indirect light. Placing it near a window (but not in direct, harsh sun) is perfect. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while very low light can cause it to become leggy and lose its compact shape. Rotate the pot regularly to encourage even growth.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry to the touch. It’s best to avoid overwatering, as it dislikes “wet feet.” Ensure the pot has good drainage. It will often tell you it’s thirsty when its leaves droop slightly.
- Feeding: Feed your Pilea with a liquid houseplant fertiliser, diluted to half-strength, once a month during the warmer growing months (spring and summer).
- Pruning: Pruning is simple. Just remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base. You can also carefully separate and repot the small “pups” that grow from the soil to create new plants.
Usage in the Home
The Chinese Money Plant is an excellent feature for tables, desks, and shelves. Its unique, geometric shape makes it a perfect fit for minimalist, Scandi, or contemporary interior styles. It’s also one of the most shared plants, making it a great conversation piece.
