The pomelo (Citrus maxima or Citrus grandis), also known as pummelo or shaddock, is the largest of all citrus fruits and a direct ancestor of the grapefruit. Originating from Southeast Asia, it features a very thick, spongy rind that’s easy to peel, revealing sweet, juicy, and often less acidic flesh than grapefruit. The segments are typically large, firm, and often have a slightly bitter pith that is usually discarded. Pomelos are enjoyed fresh, in salads, or as a refreshing snack. They are also a good source of Vitamin C. For healthy growth and abundant, high-quality fruit production, pomelo trees require full sun exposure, ideally receiving at least 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While they can tolerate very light partial shade, especially in extremely hot climates, consistent full sun is crucial for good flowering, fruit set, and the development of their characteristic sweet flavor. They also prefer well-drained soil and protection from strong winds.
