Rose ‘Satchmo’ (Rosa ‘Satchmo’) is a highly regarded Floribunda rose known for its spectacular colour and prolific blooming habit. It produces large, high-centred flowers in massive clusters, boasting a bright, clear deep orange-red or orange-scarlet colour that holds up well, even in hot weather. The colour is rich, but the rose has only a light, mild fragrance. Growing on a vigorous, upright, and bushy shrub, it provides strong colour and makes an excellent choice for a hedge, mass planting, or as a vibrant feature in a mixed border. It is noted for its good disease resistance and hardiness.
Care Tips:
-
Position: Requires a spot in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun daily) to promote the best flower production and overall plant health.
-
Soil: Plant in deep, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Roses are heavy feeders.
-
Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during the active growth and flowering periods in spring and summer. Aim water at the base of the plant and avoid wetting the foliage to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
-
Pruning: Prune hard in winter (the dormant season) to remove old, dead, or crossing wood and shape the bush. Deadhead (remove spent flowers) throughout the flowering season to encourage continuous blooming.
-
Fertilising: Feed regularly every 4–6 weeks throughout the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a fertiliser specifically formulated for roses.
-
Pests/Diseases: While generally resistant, monitor for common rose issues like aphids, black spot, and powdery mildew. Ensure good air circulation and follow a preventative spraying schedule if necessary.
-
Usage: Fantastic as a long-lasting cut flower, or used in borders where its vibrant colour can draw the eye.
