Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’, often confused with the common Pothos (Epipremnum), is a spectacular tropical trailing vine known as Satin Pothos, due to the subtle shimmer on its leaves. The ‘Exotica’ cultivar is distinguished by having significantly larger leaves and a much heavier concentration of silver variegation compared to the standard S. pictus ‘Argyraeus’. The leaves are dark green, heart-shaped, and covered in large, irregular, blotchy patches of metallic, luminous silver-grey. This variegation gives the foliage a beautiful matte texture and a “painted” appearance. It is an excellent, durable houseplant for hanging baskets, trailing from a shelf, or climbing a moss pole, offering a unique silvery contrast to other green foliage plants
Care Tips
-
Light: Prefers medium to bright, indirect light. Brighter light enhances the contrast and vibrancy of the silver variegation. Low light may cause the leaves to lose some of their silver patterns. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
-
Watering: Allow the top third to half of the soil to dry out completely before watering. It is less forgiving of overwatering than true Pothos, so ensure the soil is not soggy.
-
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity. Low humidity can cause the leaf edges and tips to turn brown and crispy.
-
Temperature: Thrives in average room temperatures (18°C–25°C). Protect it from cold draughts.
-
Soil: Use a standard, well-draining potting mix that retains a bit of moisture but does not compact easily.
-
Fertilising: Feed once a month during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a half-strength, balanced liquid fertiliser.
