The ‘Seedless Valencia’ is a highly favoured variety of sweet orange, either a specific mutation or a bud sport (like ‘Delta Seedless’) of the classic Valencia orange. It is the dominant commercial juicing orange worldwide, but its versatility and late-season harvest make it incredibly popular for home gardens, particularly in Australia.

The fruit is medium to large, round, and has a comparatively thin, smooth, bright orange rind (sometimes retaining a slight green tinge when fully ripe, a characteristic of Valencia types). The flesh is bright orange, highly acidic when first ready, but develops an exceptional sweet, rich, and juicy flavour the longer it remains on the tree. As its name suggests, it is virtually seedless, making it perfect for juicing as well as fresh eating.

A significant benefit of this variety is its long harvest window: it is a late-season orange, often ripening in late winter and can be held on the tree for several months (into the summer) where the sweetness continuously improves. It is one of the last oranges of the season, helping bridge the gap before the new season’s early varieties start.

Care Tips

  • Position: Requires a position in full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for optimal growth, flavour, and sweetness. Shelter from cold winds.

  • Climate: Best suited to Warm Temperate and Subtropical climates. It needs warmth for the fruit to develop its full sugar content. Protect young trees from frost.

  • Soil: Plant in deep, fertile, and very well-drained soil. Like all citrus, it is prone to root rot in soggy conditions.

  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the growing season (spring and summer) and when the fruit is swelling. Consistent moisture prevents fruit dry-out and drop.

  • Fertilising: Citrus are heavy feeders. Apply a high-quality citrus fertiliser (high in nitrogen and potassium) three to four times a year: in early spring, mid-summer, and early autumn.

  • Pruning: Prune lightly after the fruit harvest to shape the tree and remove dead or crossing branches. Remove any suckers growing below the graft union immediately.

  • Harvest: Fruit is ready from late winter and can be harvested as needed, with the flavour getting sweeter the longer it is left on the tree.
