Lomandra confertifolia is a highly popular choice for Australian landscapes due to its elegant, soft appearance and legendary toughness. Unlike some of the larger, coarser Mat Rushes, this species is known for its finer, more needle-like leaves that create a delicate, feathery texture in the garden. It forms a neat, rounded clump that gracefully arches towards the ground, making it an excellent plant for adding movement and softness to structured designs.

In spring and summer, the plant produces small, branched flower spikes tucked amongst the foliage. These tiny yellow blossoms emit a delightful honey-like fragrance that attracts native bees and butterflies. Because it is an evergreen and doesn’t “brown off” like many exotic grasses, it provides a reliable, lush green (or blue-grey, depending on the cultivar) presence throughout the year. Its ability to thrive in a variety of light levels and soil types makes it a “problem-solver” plant for almost any Australian garden.

Care Tips

  • Position: Highly adaptable; it thrives in full sun through to heavy shade. In very hot, inland areas, some afternoon shade will help the foliage stay vibrant.

  • Climate: Extremely hardy across Australia. It is drought-tolerant once established and can handle heavy frosts and coastal salt spray with ease.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil but is surprisingly tolerant of a wide range of types, from sandy coastal soils to heavier clays.

  • Watering: Low water requirements once established. While it can survive long dry spells, an occasional deep soak during a scorching summer will keep the foliage looking lush and prevent the tips from drying out.

  • Fertilising: Not a heavy feeder. Apply a balanced, low-phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring to encourage fresh growth.

  • Pruning: Generally requires very little maintenance. If the plant becomes untidy after several years, it can be “hard pruned” (cut back to about 10–15 centimetres from the ground) in late winter to rejuvenate the clump.

  • Maintenance: Mulching around the base is helpful to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture, though the plant is dense enough to eventually act as its own living mulch.

Landscape Use Lomandra confertifolia is the ultimate choice for mass planting under trees, along driveways, or as a softening border for paths. It is particularly effective when used in a Divider Trough to create a low, “mound-style” green hedge that requires almost no clipping. It also looks beautiful in a Stump pot where its fine foliage can spill over the edges, providing a soft contrast to more upright or architectural plants.
