Apple ‘Crimson Crisp’ (also known by its breeding designation ‘Co-op 39’) is a high-quality, modern, deciduous apple variety. The tree itself is vigorous and upright. It produces medium-sized, round-conic apples that are distinguished by their attractive, nearly solid, deep crimson-red skin. The flesh is white, exceptionally firm and crisp, with a fine texture and a balanced sweet-tart flavour that is aromatic and complex. This variety is highly valued for its natural resistance to several common apple diseases, making it an excellent, low-maintenance choice for the home gardener. The fruit stores remarkably well, retaining its crunch long after picking.
Care Tips
-
Position: Requires a spot in full sun (at least 6 hours per day) for the best fruit colour and flavour development.
-
Climate: Best suited to Cool to Temperate climates. It requires a specific amount of winter chill hours to set a good crop.
-
Soil: Plant in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. If planting in heavy clay, amend the soil heavily or plant on a slight mound.
-
Watering: Water regularly and deeply, especially during dry periods and from spring bloom through to the final fruit swell in summer. Consistent moisture prevents fruit drop and maintains quality.
-
Pollination: ‘Crimson Crisp’ is not self-fertile and requires a cross-pollinator planted nearby. Good compatible pollinators include ‘Gala’, ‘Granny Smith’, ‘Fuji’, or ‘Pink Lady’.
-
Pruning: Prune annually in winter when the tree is dormant. Aim to maintain an open vase shape to allow plenty of sunlight and air circulation, which is vital for disease resistance and fruit quality.
-
Harvest: Fruit ripens in mid to late autumn (typically March/April in Australia). Pick when the deep red colour is fully developed and the background colour has faded from green to yellow.
