Acronychia laevis is a sophisticated evergreen tree native to the rainforests of eastern Australia. It is highly prized in horticulture for its dense, shapely canopy and foliage that appears almost polished. The leaves are a deep, rich green and, when crushed, emit a pleasant, spicy citrus aroma, reflecting its membership in the Rue (Rutaceae) family. While it can grow into a medium-sized tree in the wild, it typically maintains a more compact, manageable size of 4 to 6 metres in suburban garden settings.

The plant produces clusters of small, inconspicuous creamy-white flowers in summer. These are followed by the tree’s most striking feature: small, angular fruits that transition through shades of green and cream to a vibrant pink or lavender-purple. These decorative berries are not only visually appealing but are also a vital food source for many native fruit-eating birds, such as Figbirds and Satin Bowerbirds. Its non-invasive root system and clean habit make it an excellent choice for modern urban landscapes.

Care Tips

  • Position: Thrives in a range of light conditions from full sun to heavy shade. To achieve the densest foliage and best fruit production, a position with plenty of morning sun and afternoon protection is ideal.

  • Climate: Prefers warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical climates. It is relatively hardy but should be protected from heavy frosts when young. It handles the humidity of the Australian east coast exceptionally well.

  • Soil: Requires moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It performs best in loamy soils but is quite adaptable as long as the drainage is adequate.

  • Watering: Needs regular watering during its establishment phase. Once mature, it is moderately drought-tolerant but appreciates a deep soak during particularly dry spells to keep the glossy foliage looking its best.

  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser or a native-specific feed in early spring. An additional application in late summer can help support the development of its colourful fruits.

  • Pruning: Naturally maintains a neat, rounded crown, but it can be pruned to maintain a specific height or to encourage a bushier habit if being used as a screen.

  • Maintenance: A thick layer of organic mulch around the root zone will help mimic its natural rainforest floor environment, keeping the roots cool and moist.
