Alocasia macrorrhizos, commonly known as Giant Taro, Giant Elephant Ear, or Upright Elephant Ear, is a magnificent tropical perennial. It is prized for its dramatic, enormous foliage, which can reach over a metre in length in ideal outdoor conditions. The leaves are typically a bright, glossy green, distinctly ribbed, and held rigidly upright on long, strong petioles (leaf stalks), giving it a commanding, architectural presence. This plant grows from a thick rhizome or corm and is exceptionally effective for creating a lush, tropical backdrop in warm gardens or as a huge statement plant in large indoor containers where its size is slightly restricted. In tropical regions, its corms are sometimes eaten after careful preparation.
Care Tips for Alocasia macrorrhizos
-
Position (Outdoor): Prefers partial shade or dappled light, especially protection from hot, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. It needs a warm, sheltered spot.
-
Position (Indoor): Requires bright, indirect light near a window to support the growth of its large leaves.
-
Climate: Thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. It is sensitive to frost, which will cause the plant to die back, though the corm may survive to regrow in spring.
-
Soil: Requires rich, loamy, well-draining soil that retains moisture. If potting, use a quality potting mix with added organic matter.
-
Watering: Needs consistent, heavy watering during the active growing season (spring and summer). The soil should be kept evenly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
-
Humidity: Appreciates very high humidity. Misting large leaves, grouping plants, or placing them in a greenhouse/bathroom will help prevent leaf edges from going brown.
-
Fertilising: Feed heavily! Use a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during the warmer growing months to support the massive leaves.
-
Maintenance: Alocasias may drop their oldest leaves as new ones emerge. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves. Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust.
